New Deer Resistant Perennials!

Volume 7, Issue 7      March, 2007

Hello gardening friends. We know many of you have problems with deer that turn your prized landscape into a midnight buffet. Unfortunately, with the loss of more habitats every year, the deer problem will likely not go away any time soon. So what can you do to keep the deer away from your precious plants? We recommend planting "deer resistant" plants in your landscape. Although no plants are completely "deer proof", there are many that deer do not like. In general, deer do not like plants with fragrant foliage or flowers. They also will avoid foliage that has a coarse, hairy or prickly texture or stems that contain sticky sap. Below are just a few great perennials that deer are known to avoid. Click Here to use our Plant Search and search for all deer resistant plants.

Agastache 'Purple Haze' - New for 2007!
Agastache 'Purple Haze' brings a new color palette to the common hyssop, with its long racemes of smoky blue violet flowers that rise above aromatic foliage. The striking color is the darkest we have seen for an Agastache. Blooms prolifically from July until a hard frost! It remains compact in a container with an early pinch and is very tolerant of summer heat.

Aconitum 'Stainless Steel' - New for 2007!
Aconitum 'Stainless Steel' produces loose panicles of metallic lilac-blue flowers with creamy-white centers on widely branched, arching stems. Each individual flower is shaped like a little helmet or hood, thus the common name Monkshood. They contrast nicely against the deeply cut, grey-green foliage. An excellent color addition for a late summer garden!

Unlike other Euphorbias that may turn red in the fall, 'Bonfire' displays its smoldering red foliage all summer long! Radiant chartreuse flower bracts provide a nice contrast in the spring. Nice mounding habit with foliage that is resistant to deer and rabbits.
