Clematis Care and
Planting Tips
Clematis have some pretty specific care requirements. If you can find a place to plant them where they're happy, they'll reward you with oodles of flowers.
Here are our tips for growing beautiful clematis. Be sure to read our Clematis Care Guide, too.
Make a note of the pruning group your clematis belongs to. Clematis are classified in groups 1, 2, or 3 in terms of pruning. Knowing the group will help you ensure that you don't cut off the flowers before they bloom.
Keep the roots cool. Plant clematis where the tops (vines) will get at least 5-6 hours of sun per day. Keep the roots in the shade so they stay moist and cool. (You can plant other perennials around the clematis to shade the roots.)
Plant the clematis plant two inches deeper in the ground than it is in the pot. This will give the plant a good head start on growth.
