Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips:
Astilbes grow best in light shade or filtered sun. If these, long-lived perennials, are planted in deep shade, they will not bloom as prolifically. Though they are easy to grow, Astilbes need to be kept consistently moist. If Astilbes are allowed to dry the leaves will develop brown, crispy margins and will begin to drop. Also, Astilbes are shallow rooted and often dry faster then other plants around them. Astilbes should be fertilized in late spring before flowering starts. Dormant foliage should not be cut back until spring; it will help protect the plant from winter damage. Plants should be divided in early spring every 3-4 years to maintain vigor. Propagation is by division.
