Hydrangea macrophylla 'Shamrock' PP#16,223 Common Name: “Japanese Hydrangea”
(Japanese Hydrangea) Hydrangea 'Shamrock' is an incredibly floriferous and long blooming Japanese cultivar. The masses of large, doubled, pink/blue lace-cap flowers begin in July and change to breathtaking shades of red and deep blue as the season progresses. Hydrangea 'Shamrock' prefers well-drained soil that has been amended with peat moss, leaf mold or compost. Florishes by the ocean. Prune immediately after flowering, blooms on old wood. Sets flowers buds the summer prior to blooming. Requires high moisture. Moisture is a necessity for this plant. Deciduous shrub. Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees and shrubs. Follow the label for the recommended rate of application. Flower color is affected by soil pH. For blue flowers, the soil must be acidic and for pink flowers, the soil must be more alkaline.
