And Nelly Moser is a beautiful clematis. My mother-in-law had one in a shady corner, climbing an old wind mill she had. It was just glorious. I do have a question though... growing on a tree... clematis twine don't they, rather than adhere like trumpet vine that will actually grow on, and hurt, bricks? I was thinking of planting clematis at the base of my Bradford Pears and was going to use a wire to get them up to the limbs. |

Many of our clematis should climb the tree and should not hurt the tree in anyway. The problem is the Oak tree may provide more shade than the clematis would like. You may see reduced growth or flowers. The flower color may not be as vibrant if it receives too much shade. Clematis ‘Nelly Moser’ is known to be the best clematis for a shady spot. |

I have planted 3 new clematis at the base of an Ash clump. I'd like to put a couple around an Oak. Will they "climb" the tree without a trellis? Will it hurt the trees in any way? Thanks. |
