What a great idea, Sandy! I love the clematis but don't have enough room for all I want. BUT putting them on lilacs will work for me! When the lilacs are through the clematis will begin blooming. I'm going to get to ordering clematis. Thanks for that idea.

Actually... I wonder if I couldn't plant at the base of a tree I have. I did plant blue morning glories one year and put some twine in the ground and up the tree to a limb to get them started. Those vines made that tree bloom blue for the whole summer! It was wonderful. If I used wire rather than twine, it would last, and the clematis could be a wonderful addition to that tree, don't you think?

I love clematis, and use them throughout my garden on just about everything and on everything. Try one on an evergreen bush and watch the comments come. I put a white clematis Candida on a green yew bush. I wove it thru and the blooms looked beautiful on the evergreen shrub. The neighbors were knocking at my door!!!!! They always work well on a shrub, i.e., lilac with a bloom time that ends and then a green shrub. I put a red flowering clematis thru the lilac bush, and it blooms continually thru the summer after the lilac is done. So many wonderful things clematis can do for your gardens!!!!!! Enjoy!!

What great ideas. Now I feel there is good information to use as a guide. Thanks so much Sandi & F.D.

I have many clematis, most of which I purchased from Garden Crossings. They have great ones!!!! Huldine, is a white small flowering clematis. I have a few of them growing thru Hydrangeas of different colors, beautiful. Tie Dye would be beautiful as well.
Check these out on Garden Crossings. The small flowering clematis have so many blooms and last a long time. The large flowering clematis put on a show by themselves. I usually use the smaller flowering ones thru shrubs, roses and the like. Hope this helps.

I'm not an expert in Clematis and colour preferences vary a lot, but if you are looking for an opinion from someone who knows a bit about colour and has grown just a few Clematis, I don't think you could go wrong with good ol' Jackmanii. Is is tough as nails as clematis varieties go. A deep dark purple that would look great with the contrasting bright red of your rose. "The President" is another in that colour range. Both available on this site....the Jackmanii would propably grow a little taller.

Whichever one you decide on, make sure that it has plenty of shade at the base of the climatis, bury it deep and with lots of manure. Location is critical with growing this type of plant. If the roots get too hot, it won't survive, otherwise they're pretty easy. e.g. A south facing location would not be a good idea in a hot summer climate.
