Hollyhocks are a short lived perennial or biennial. They will provide your garden with the old fashion perennial garden look. Hollyhocks are found in many cottage gardens as a background border. Plant in an area where the plant will get a minimum of six hours of sun every day. They may need staking if planted in a windy location. Rich, moist, well-drained soil is essential. Garden pests may include both caterpillars and Japanese beetles. Propagation is by seed.
