Athyrium grows best in partial to full shade where soil is moist. Some sunlight is necessary to draw out the coloring. It is best to leave the old foliage on the plant over the winter. Foliage should be removed once the new shoots reach about 6 inches in height. Propagation is by division in the spring. Athyrium should not be divided in the fall.
