(Fern) Athyrium 'Dre's Dagger' adds great texture to your shade gardens. This compact form of the Victoria fern grows to 30 inches. The unique foliage is a dark green color. Criss-cross pinnae (leaflets) line the frond and forms a fringe-like crested tip at the end of each frond. 'Dre's Dagger' is best grown in moist rich soils, and tolerates humidity. If this fern dries out it will go into early dormancy. The red petioles of 'Dre's Dagger' contrast beautifully with the green foliage. 'Dre's Dagger' works great in shade gardens, as a border plant, in a container, or beautiful filler for under pine trees. The foliage is Deer resistant.
Athyrium grows best in partial to full shade where soil is moist. Some sunlight is necessary to draw out the coloring. It is best to leave the old foliage on the plant over the winter. Foliage should be removed once the new shoots reach about 6 inches in height. Propagation is by division in the spring. Athyrium should not be divided in the fall.
