Common Name: “Fern”

(Fern) Native to North America, Athyrium boasts lacy, finely textured medium green fronds that arch elegantly upward from the center of the crown. New leaves are continually produced throughout the season with the stems maturing to a dark red. Athyrium is a vigorous grower in loamy humus-rich soils although it seems to be more tolerant of sun and dry soils than many other ferns.

Fern Growing Tips:

Athyrium grows best in partial to full shade where soil is moist. Some sunlight is necessary to draw out the coloring. It is best to leave the old foliage on the plant over the winter. Foliage should be removed once the new shoots reach about 6 inches in height. Propagation is by division in the spring. Athyrium should not be divided in the fall.
