See what our great customers had to say about the Black Beauty™ Sambucus nigra 'Gerda'
Very leggy. Growth is horizontal as much as it it is vertical. My family calls it the Medusa shrub. I'm in zone 6a and this plant has to be cut back every year--no life whatsoever on old branches. Despite close proximity of another elderberry bush I have yet to see more than one bunch of flowers. The color is nice and the kids find it quirky. Wouldn't be my first choice.
(Elderberry) Black Beauty™ Sambucus is definitely a WOW plant! The intriguing purple-black foliage is breathtaking and provides all season interest. In midsummer the dark foliage is complimented by massive 10" pink flowers that emit a light lemon fragrance! Black Beauty™ is easy to grow and versatile in the landscape - it can be grown as a shrub or cut it back each year and use it as a bold perennial or train it to grow as a small tree! A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrub.
