(Blueberry-Lowbush) Imagine Blueberries right at your fingertips as you step out the door! It is now possible with Vaccinium ‘Top Hat’ Blueberries. ‘Top Hat’ Blueberries can be grown in a decorative patio planter for those with small gardens and patios. In the spring, small white flowers emerge followed by bright blue, juicy, sweet berries in July and August. ‘Top Hat’ produces full size fruit on a dwarf/miniature size plant. The berries are great for snacking, pies, muffins and jams. ‘Top Hat’ Blueberries are adaptable to many soil types as long as they are in well-drained soil with a pH level between 4.0 and 5.0.To obtain a soil with lower pH you can mix peat moss, leaf mold, or compost. A full sun location is recommended for best performance. ‘Top Hat’ are considered Self Pollinating, although multiple plants can be a benefit. Blueberry ‘Top Hat’ is considered a lowbush variety withstanding cold winters. Standing 18-24 inches tall at maturity, we recommend that you let your plant put on growth for the first few years pinching back any blossoms that form. This will allow your plant to put on good, strong growth. Once your plant has matured, at around 3-4 years, you will reach full production. We recommend at this time to trim any dead or weak branches out, this will stimulate new growth meaning more berries.
