(Apple Tree) Enjoy the fresh fragrance of growing your own Jonagold apples. Originated in 1953 at Cornell University in New York, the Jonagold apple is a cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious apples. Great for snacking, Jonagold produce large sweet/tart fruit with a thin crimson skin that can range from fully red to red/green. The fruit has a crisp, juicy, sweet flavor good for baking, salads or eating fresh from the tree. You can expect fruit in Mid September depending on the season and your location. Jonagold Apples grow best in well drained, loamy soil with pH levels between 6.0 and 7.0. A full sun locations receiving at least 6 hours of sun is recommended. Jonagold is a triploid, with sterile pollination. It requires an apple of a different variety to aid in pollination. Also note, it is not able to pollinate other varieties. We recommend pollinating with Granny Smith, Red Delicious or Fuji. Jonagold trees can grow 10-15 foot tall and wide. We recommend trimming and shaping your tree for the first 2-3 years to encourage better branching and structure. Once a good structure is obtained, we recommend pruning your tree in the late fall to encourage more branching creating more buds. Generally it takes 2-5 years to start producing fruit. Requires 700-800 chill hours.
