If you are looking for a native plant that is drought tolerant and easy to grow, look no further than Baptisia or False Indigo. This member of the pea family has 2 1/2-3' foliage that is dense and gives the plant a shrub-like appearance. The pea-like blossoms appear on flower spikes 12-24" long and come in many colors ranging from indigo blue, to pink, to yellow, to white, and even brown!
When choosing a site for your False Indigo plant, pick a site in full sun and one where you will not have to move your plant, as Baptisia roots grow deep and don't like to be disturbed. This stunning perennial needs minimal care and will reward you with blooms in late spring to summer and seed pods in fall.
