Stachys - Lamb's Ear

Some species of Lamb’s Ear, or Stachys, are grown for their gray woolly leaves (byzantina). The species Hummelo, is grown for its showy flowers that resemble salvias. Their leaves are glossy and dark green, 9-12″ high and form a nice clump that will spread over time into a nice dense ground cover. The flower stems appear 12″ above the foliage in late spring to early summer. Grown best in average, well-drained soil in full sun, Lamb’s Ear does, however, show some drought tolerance once established. Light afternoon shade is appreciated in hot, humid climates.
