Heptacodium, also known as the Seven Sons plant, is an attractive and seldom used deciduous shrub that can also be grown as a small tree. Heptacodium was introduced from China. It is a cousin of the honeysuckle, and is also related to viburnum and forsythia. This ornamental shrub has glossy green leaves and an interesting exfoliating bark. But the show doesn’t stop there. Boasting fragrant, white, jasmine-like blooms that develop into red bracts that will persist well into fall. This is truly a shrub to include in the landscape for season-long interest!
