Known as ‘Queen of the Climbers,’ the clematis vine perennial is famous for climbing structures like a trellis, arbor, or fence. They don’t use sticky aerial roots or wrap their main stems like morning glories, though. Instead, their young leaf stems curl and grasp onto narrow objects they touch, ideally those that are under ¼ to ½ inch in diameter like wire and garden twine. 

Most clematis also grow best when their tops are in full sun and their roots are somewhat shaded.

The best time to plant clematis is in the early spring or early to mid-autumn. It gives them time to establish roots without the extreme heat of summer or cold temperatures of winter.
