Description
(Beardtongue) A plant that brings total opposite colors together and is striking to see. Penstemon 'Onyx and Pearls' although "black and white" is one of the showiest plants in the garden. The dense, thick near-black foliage creates a mounding habit that when in bloom reaches up to 42 inches tall. Early to mid-summer lavender white bell flowers line the tall spikes that are nestled just above the dark foliage. If you watch closely you may see hummingbirds fluttering from one flower spike to another. Hardy in zones 3-8, 'Onyx and Pearls' likes to be grown in full sun areas and is very drought tolerant once established. Penstemon is a native perennial that is easy to grow and makes a great cut flower, and in this case, has great foliage for cutting as well. 'Onyx and Pearls' has attractive foliage and makes a great focal point in the garden. Plant in mass, create a tall border or plant one to stand alone, however it is that you want to add this to your garden you will not be disappointed with the contrasting show it displays.
