Collection: Hens and Chicks - Sempervivum - Perennials
When we say hen and chicks, we aren't talking about the farm animals that produce eggs. We are talking about the alpine plant belonging to the Sempervivum family of succulents. These little gems are evergreen perennials that have an incredible tolerance for poor soils and challenging conditions. The most important requirement for hen and chicks is good drainage. They are drought tolerant and do not like to be over-watered. Let the soil dry out between watering's. Best grown in full sun to part shade, hen and chicks can be grown in zones 3-9. They require very little soil, making them ideal for growing in small crevasses and rock gardens or even in a container for the deck, patio or indoor tabletop in a bright location. Garden Crossings carries a colorful array of hen and chicks. Start collecting your flock today!

FAQs
Yes, hens and chicks are cold-hardy perennial succulents that return year after year across USDA Zones 3 through 8. The main rosette eventually blooms and fades, but the surrounding offsets, or chicks, fill in the space and keep the colony going season after season with minimal upkeep.
Yes, the rosettes naturally produce small offsets on short stems that root nearby and form a spreading mat over time. This self-propagating habit makes them ideal for filling rock gardens, borders, and container edges without needing to divide or replant every season.
These succulents need full sun and exceptionally well-draining, sandy or gravelly soil to thrive. Heavy or constantly wet soil leads to root rot, so raised beds, rock gardens, and containers with drainage holes are ideal settings for healthy rosette growth and vibrant leaf color.
Chick Charms varieties differ mainly in rosette color, size, and pattern, ranging from compact types in shades like apple green and berry purple to larger Giant series options with bold jewel tones. All share the same easy-care growing needs, so selection typically comes down to color preference and mature size.
Hens and chicks perform well in both settings as long as the soil drains freely. Their shallow root systems and compact size make them well suited to shallow containers, strawberry pots, and rock garden pockets, in addition to traditional in-ground borders and rooftop-style plantings.
