Gaura is a North American native wildflower that can be a perennial in zones 5-11, growing anywhere from 12 inches to 4 feet high depending on the cultivar. The common names of Gaura describe its attributes well: Wandflower, Whirling Butterfly and Bee Blossom. Tall flower stalks arise out of delicate lance-like foliage with numerous one inch flowers that resemble small butterflies dancing delicately in the breeze. These blooms can be white or shades of pink and attract pollinators. Long-blooming and low maintenance, Gaura is excellent for the wildflower garden or planted in containers. It does develop a taproot, so does not like being transplanted once established. Combine Gaura with Coneflowers, Liatris, Ornamental Grasses, Tall Sedum and Yarrow for a beautiful wildflower combination.
