Gardenia

The Gardenia is one of the most beautiful and intoxicatingly fragrant shrubs available to gardeners in zones 7-10. Native to Southern China and Japan, the Gardenia will bloom throughout the year in climates where the temperatures do not drop below 60 degrees. Gorgeous pure white double blooms are set off by evergreen, dark glossy foliage. Typically growing 3 to 6 feet tall, newer hybrids have produced plants that are more compact. The Gardenia thrives in moist, acidic, well-drained soil in full to part sun. If you live in a cooler climate, you can overwinter Gardenia as a houseplant. Just be sure to provide bright light, average to high humidity, and water moderately. Best enjoyed in a container on the deck or patio where you can appreciate the wonderful fragrance, Gardenia are also great in beds and borders or used as a foundation plant.
