(Hosta) ‘First Frost’ Hosta , a sport of ‘Halcyon’, is a designer Hosta that displays excellent performance in zones 3-9, has a long season of interest, and has leaves of good substance. It also shows good slug resistance. The deep, rich, blue-green centers of the leaves are edged with a gold margin in the spring that matures to pure white. Light lavender flowers are produced on 28 inch scapes in midsummer and they attract hummingbirds to the plant. ‘First Frost’ will add color and interest to your part shade to full shade garden and is also an excellent choice for use in a mixed container planting. ‘First Frost’ grows well in most soil types with average to moist conditions. It can reach a maximum height of 16 inches and spreads as wide as 36 inches. Mulching is suggested when the plant is young and if it is planted in a more sunny location. This will help keep moisture at the roots. We also recommend trimming the foliage back in the fall when the leaves start to get slimy. ‘First Frost’ hosta is a stunning focal point plant that also looks great surrounded by other hostas, or contrasting shade plants like brunnera, heuchera, or ferns.
