An evergreen perennial ground cover, Vinca minor, sometimes called Myrtle or periwinkle, is excellent for erosion control and smothering weeds. It can even be grown under the canopy of pine trees. Vinca prefers average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in part sun to part shade, but is tolerant of full shade areas. It tends to yellow in full sun locations. The trailing stems of Vinca root along the ground and lavender blue star-shaped flowers appear among the smooth leaves in spring and off and on throughout the summer into fall.
