Leucothoe

Leucothoe, also known as ‘Doghobble’, is a unique broadleaf evergreen shrub that is native to the Eastern United States.  It can be seen growing wild in woodlands and along streams.  Its ideal growing conditions are sites in shade or part shade with acidic, moist, well-draining soil.  Sun can be tolerated in northern locations, but the plant must be kept well watered.  Leucothoe displays intertwining, arching branches that are graced by fragrant, white, bell-shaped flowers in spring that resemble Lily of the Valley blooms.  Some species have new stem growth that is red, burgundy or bright green and the glossy attractive leaves can be variegated and flush burgundy in the fall.  This easy care, deer resistant, trouble free shrub is ideal for the shade garden, as a low evergreen hedge, on a bank as erosion control or as a specimen plant.
