Sorbaria - False Spiraea

Sorbaria, also known as False Spirea is a deer resistant deciduous shrub that is very cold hardy typically in zones 2-8.  The foliage has a tropical look and the lance-shaped leaves show off the dramatic white flowers that resemble those of astilbe.  The flowers appear in summer and will attract butterflies and other pollinators.  Sorbaria does spread by root suckers.  These can easily be pruned to maintain the mounded habit or place the shrub in a naturalized area where it can be allowed to spread.  It can also be placed in a container and used as a great specimen for the deck or patio.  Sorbaria prefers well-drained soil with consistent moisture and full to part sun, but it is also tolerant of clay soils.
