(Sorbaria) MR. MUSTARD® Sorbaria is an attractive, deer resistant shrub that is an extremely hardy choice for Northern gardeners growing in zones 2-7. Standing 2-3′ high by 3-4′ wide, MR. MUSTARD® is a compact selection that is about a fifth the size of the common species known as Ural False Spirea. The fern-like cutleaf foliage and white flower plumes are reminiscent of astilbe. MR. MUSTARD® False Spirea boasts a colorful spring display with its foliage showing shades of yellow, orange, red and even flushes of pink. Come mid-summer, the foliage turns bright green. The showy flowers bloom in summer and will attract butterflies and other pollinators. MR. MUSTARD® should be grown in full to part sun and shows good tolerance to alkaline and clay soils, although it doesn’t like very wet areas. It does spread by root suckers so remove those to keep a mounded habit or allow the shrub to naturalize. Blooming on old wood, MR. MUSTARD® can be pruned after flowering if desired. It is a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrub.
