Top 2025 New Plant Varieties
-
Susan Martin
One of the most exciting things about owning a garden center is that we get to be among a select few to see all of the new plants coming out a year ahead of everyone, and we can put together our list of top 2025 new plants. We trial many of them here in our zone 6 garden and visit other trial gardens to see how the plants grow so we can be sure we are picking the best of the bunch for you, our loyal customers.
Here are 13 new 2025 plant varieties including annuals, perennials and shrubs that we can’t wait for you to try this season.
#1 – Sun Parasol® XP Bluephoria™ mandevilla
One of several striking new colors of mandevillas joining our lineup this year, Bluephoria™ is especially unique because of its color-shifting blooms. The new blossoms open clear pink, then morph into more of a lavender blue-purple as they age. Since both colors appear on the plant at once, it’ll look like you are growing two different colors of mandevillas together, while only needing to plant one. Hummingbirds love them all, no matter the flower color. This short, bushy selection is best grown in a hanging basket or upright container.
Annual, 1-2’ tall x 2-3’ spread, full sun, heat tolerant, moderate moisture, deer resistant, pollinator-friendly
#2 – SuperCal® series of petchoa (Petunia x Calibrachoa)
This year, we are excited to offer a whole new series of 13 colorful “petchoas”. The name gives a clue to its two parents: petunia and calibrachoa. Offering a broader color range than typical petunias, you’ll find elusive orange and gold blooms along with exciting pinks, purples and reds in the new SuperCal® petchoa series. These self-cleaning annuals have flowers that look like slightly smaller-flowered petunias and are durable in rain, heat, humidity and cold. Mix them with all your favorite annuals in containers and in the landscape.
Annual, size varies by variety, full sun to light shade, heat tolerant, cold tolerant, moderate to moist soil, feed regularly for best bloom performance, pollinator-friendly.
#3 – Supertunia Tiara® series of petunias
See what’s new this year in Supertunias! The new Supertunia Tiara® Pink and Blue petunias have blooms that’ll remind you of a morning glory in that they have a luminescent white glow emanating from the center of each flower. Choose from princess pink or vivid violet blue and expect these gorgeous blooms to keep up with your best annuals in porch pots, hanging baskets and window boxes. Supertunia Tiara Pink is also striking as a flowering groundcover in the landscape where it covers a surprising amount of ground in a short time. Both bloom non-stop all season without deadheading.
Annual, 4-12” tall x 18-24” spread, full sun to part sun, moderate moisture, feed regularly for best bloom performance, pollinator-friendly.
#4 – Matilda Ptilotus
If you like to grow flowers for cutting, this new Ptilotus is a must-have, and it is one of our top 2025 new plants. Its unique, feathery plumes last a good two weeks in a vase when they are cut fresh, or they can be hung and dried as an everlasting cut flower. New buds open a silvery color, then develop into soft pink, silky-textured flowers on tall, reddish stems. If using this plant in containers, plan on using it as your tall “thriller” element. It is a sun-loving annual that thrives in heat and tolerates drought.
Annual, 20-32” tall x 12-24” spread, full sun, low water requirements once established, heat tolerant, pollinator-friendly.
#5 – Unplugged® White Salvia
We’ve waited a long time to find a clean-looking, white-flowered salvia like this and it is finally here! A great companion to Unplugged® So Blue™ salvia, this silvery white new cultivar looks equally at home growing in containers and landscapes. Since the petals shed cleanly once spent, you won’t need to spend your summer pinching off the old blooms. They’ll keep right on coming from spring into fall. Pollinating bees, butterflies and hummingbirds seem equally impressed with Unplugged® White salvia. This is one of our top 2025 new plants.
Annual, 14-24” tall x 12-16” spread, full sun to part sun, moderate to drier soils, heat tolerant, deer resistant, pollinator-friendly.
#6 – Summerlong™ Mexican giant hyssop (Agastache)
We have been incredibly impressed by the new Summerlong™ series of Mexican hyssops, and they are one of our top 2025 new plants. Blooming in a range of colors that includes Lemon, Lilac, Magenta, Peach and Coral, these plants bloomed non-stop in our gardens all summer and into the fall. Though not as cold hardy as other Agastache we offer, Summerlong varieties are definitely worth growing as annuals for their amazing flower power and ability to attract all kinds of pollinators including hummingbirds.
Tender perennial for zones 7-10 (annual elsewhere), 16-22” tall and wide, full sun, moderate to drier soils, heat tolerant, deer resistant, pollinator-friendly.
#7 – Summer Heat Alstroemeria
When we visited the perennial trials in early September last year, we couldn’t believe how much color the new Summer series of hardy Alstroemerias were still pumping out. It was easy to spot them from quite a distance since their flowers were so vivid. We plan to offer the whole series of three colors, starting with Summer Heat. It bears large, brilliant red flowers with a gold speckled splotch near the throat. Tall stems and long-lasting blooms make these new Alstroemerias top-notch cut flowers and part of our top 2025 new plants list.
Perennial for zones 6-9, 36-42” tall x 30-36” spread, full sun to part sun, moderate to moist soil, heat tolerant, pollinator-friendly.
#8 – Ocean Sunset™ series of ice plant (Delosperma)
We’ve been loving the new drought tolerant perennial options coming our way in recent years, and the new Ocean Sunset™ series of hardy ice plants is no exception. Bearing the largest flowers of any Delosperma we offer, these new varieties have crazy intense flower colors ranging from glowing orange to vivid violet. They make a great low maintenance, long-blooming groundcover, perfect for tucking into smaller spaces in the garden where you need a bright splash of summer color.
Perennial for zones 5-9, 4-6” tall x 10-12” spread, full sun, low water requirements once established, heat tolerant, pollinator-friendly.
#9 – Luminary® ‘Pink Lightning’ tall garden phlox (Phlox paniculata)
We are always happy to find a phlox that is more resistant to powdery mildew, and ‘Pink Lightning’ has proven to be just that in trials. Coupled with large clusters of glowing pink flowers with a white starburst center, it is a real standout in the landscape. Butterflies and other pollinators seem to be as drawn to its fragrant blooms as we are, plus they are wonderful in bouquets. There’s a lot to love about this outstanding new tall garden phlox! It joins three other colors in the Luminary® series this year.
Perennial for zones 3-8, 30-36” tall x 24-30” spread, full sun to part shade, moderate to moist soil, pollinator-friendly.
#10 – Skyward™ Pink speedwell (Veronica)
We enjoyed growing this new color in the popular Skyward™ series of Veronica both from a grower’s perspective and as gardeners. It held its shape nicely, looking great in containers in our greenhouse, and then kept its picture-perfect presentation in the landscape. Loads of bright baby pink flower spikes topped the clump of dark green, narrow leaves which remained healthy-looking all summer. Pollinating bees are big fans of this perennial, but thankfully, deer are not. Expect it to bloom from late spring into the summer.
Perennial for zones 4-9, 14-18” tall x 14-17” spread, full sun, moderate moisture, pollinator-friendly, deer resistant.
#11 – Mop Top™ fountain butterfly bush (Buddleia alternifolia)
Forget everything you knew about butterfly bush! This completely new take on a cult classic has its roots in a different species that blooms at a different time of year, is more cold hardy, and has a unique form. Long, weeping branches create a draping or fountain effect, especially when the lavender purple flowers appear and butterflies start flocking. Even when it’s not in bloom, this is an attractive shrub. Unlike all of the other butterfly bush we carry, the new Mop Top™ blooms in the spring on old wood. Take care not to prune it anytime other than right after it finishes blooming, as you do with your bigleaf hydrangeas.
Shrub for zones 4-8, 3-5’ tall and wide, full sun, moderate to drier soils, deer resistant, pollinator-friendly.
#12 – Sweet Reward™ series of native azaleas
We are loving the vibrant colors of this new series of azaleas that were bred from a North American native species. While other cultivars of this type are often plagued with powdery mildew, the new Sweet Reward™ series has clean green foliage that was bred to be disease resistant. They can take the sun, but will also grow in the shade, and are best displayed near the middle of the border fronted by later blooming perennials. Choose from two colors, Coral or Pink, both of which bloom in the spring like typical azaleas. We are excited to offer these new zone 5 hardy cultivars this year.
Shrub for zones 5-8, 3-6’ tall and wide, full sun to part shade, moderate moisture, pollinator-friendly.
#13 – Reminiscent® Yellow rose
A beautiful addition to the Reminiscent® series of garden roses, this healthy, vigorous new cultivar produces full, bright yellow flowers that exude the classic rose fragrance we all love. It bloomed and rebloomed throughout the summer, quitting only when frost arrived in late fall. Plant an extra one to enjoy in bouquets because we know you will want to use this rose for cutting all season long.
Shrub for zones 4-9, 3-4.5’ tall and wide, full sun, moderate to moist soil.
