Which Espoma Organic Product is Right for You
- Susan Martin
Beautiful plants thrive with a steady supply of nutrients and microbe-rich soil, and when pest or disease issues pop up it’s comforting to know there are effective organic solutions available. Whether you consider yourself an environmentally conscious gardener or are looking for child and pet-safe products, you can count on Espoma Organic products to help your garden grow.
Espoma fertilizers, amendments and soils are made from long-lasting, organic materials that break down slowly over time, providing steady, continuous feeding for your plants. They are naturally low in salts and contain no chemicals, fillers or sludges, so there is little risk of burning or overfeeding. They are also enhanced with mycorrhizae—naturally occurring organisms that bind to the plants’ roots and encourage stronger growth.
Many of us at Garden Crossings have used Espoma products in our own gardens for years and highly recommend them. We are proud to offer them to help our customers achieve maximum gardening success.

I am a lazy gardener…I use plant tone for all my outdoor plants and they do very well. I imagine using a specific fertilizer would be great – but I just dont have the time or inclination. My point for a beginner is that these are GREAT products but, if you’re just getting started or BUSY, plant tone is amazing stuff.
You left out Rosetone, Tomatotone and Berrytone, all of which I use.
I have a newly planted garden and usually put down wood chips as a mulch. I have seen where some people are using compost as a mulch. will this keep weeds at bay? would you recommend? if so, would I still have to fertilize before placing compost?
We use wood chips or bark. I have seen some people use compost for mulch but am not familiar with it my self.
Which is better for Green Giant Thuja arborvitae: Evergreen Tone or Holly Tone?
Both will work.
Which product would be best for a lavender in a large pot wintered over in zone 5.
I would recommend Plant tone
Would evergreen tone or holly tone be better for japonica cryptomeria? Also blue spruce?
I would use Holly Tone since this is an acid-growing plant. You could use Evergreen tone but the just greens a plant up.
I love Espoma products. I give all my perennials, shrubs, and trees Espoma Plant-tone each Spring, with the exception of my acid loving plants like hydrangeas and azaleas, which I give Espoma Holly-tone.
Then 3 months later (around June) I give all my flower-blooming plants Espoma Flower-tone to help them bloom well. For continuous bloomers like Daylily Stella de Oro, Daylily Happy Returns, and Jethro Tull Coreopsis, I give a second sprinkle of Flower-tone.
And I learned that boxwood should also be given Plant-tone and never Holly-tone.
I always add Espoma Biotone to the planting hole when I plant a new plant. It helps it establish healthy roots. It makes a huge difference in the health of the plant.
How do I use biotone to fertilize and fertilize an established small Japanese Maple tree? Is this called top dressing? Should I try to mix it with water or just sprinkle the pellets around the tree?
You could use Tree Tone or Bio Tone. Sprinkle it on the soil and water it in.
