Common Name: “Bee Balm”

(Bee Balm) Monarda 'Pardon My Purple' PP22170 is the most compact Monarda to date! If your garden is lacking space for the traditional large Monarda, this compact introduction is just for you. This is a great selection for the front of your garden or for use in a combination planter.  Standing only 12" tall the large 2 1/2-3" fuchsia purple flowers are a real standout. The little mounds of mint-scented glossy dark green foliage are truly a hummingbird's dream come true.  'Pardon My Purple' exhibits excellent mildew resistance unlike many of the traditional Bee Balm varieties. Monarda is a deer resistant perennial! 'Pardon My Purple' is another great selection in the Proven Winners Perennial plant line.

Bee Balm Growing Tips:

In nature Mondara is found by riverbands and in rich, moist soil. Full Sun is the best location for Monarda, although part shade is also an option. In part shade it will tend to spread more quickly. Monarda multiply rapidly by underground growth or can self seed. Deadhead flowers for repeat blooms.

Powdery mildew is a common fungal problem with Monarda. Some varieties are more resistant to it than others. To prevent this fungus from appearing, large clumps should be thinned out so that the air circulates freely around them. The soil should also be kept consistantly moist; dry soil promotes powdery mildew.
