(Hosta) From the talented hybridizer, Hans Hansen, comes the grand specimen Hosta ‘Vulcan’. The broad, heart-shaped leaves display a white center and contrasting dark green margins with lighter yellow coloring that jets towards the white centers. ‘Vulcan’ is a vigorous, white-centered sport of ‘Captain Kirk’ and produces light lavender flowers on white scapes in mid to late summer. The tubular shape of these flowers are great for hummingbirds and you may see a few come and visit. Hardy in zones 3-9, ‘Vulcan’ can reach a maximum height of 22 inches and can spread up to 36 inches in width. Plant in part shade to full shade areas, and mulch around the base of the plant for the first few seasons. Also do this if planted in a more sunny location. This will help keep moisture at the roots. We also recommend trimming off the leaves of the hosta once they are spent in the fall. This will help mitigate slugs and keep the plant healthy and ready for new growth in the spring. Plant with other hostas for a patchwork of color, or plant with complimentary companion plants that also love the shade. Hosta ‘Vulcan’ makes a stunning addition to full shade gardens!
